New PMA leadership to grow and develop association

The Board of PMA has announced the appointment of industry veteran Jim Esp to the position of Executive Director.

"Our industry is constantly changing," says Brian Wood, international president, PMA "We need somebody at the helm with strong leadership qualities and an in-depth understanding of the needs of our members. Nobody knows this industry better than Jim or has a stronger willingness to deal with the constant shift in the paradigms where manufacturing and distribution meet retail."

Esp has been involved in the photographic industry for more than 30 years. During the last decade, as part of the PMA senior management, the majority of his time was spent working with the overseas markets to help develop some of the world’s most successful PMA conventions and associations in Australia, Canada and Latin America.

So, what’s at the top of his list in this new role?

"Right off the bat we need to focus on making [email protected] 2012 an outstanding show," says Esp, in an interview to be published in an upcoming issue of PMA Magazine - Connecting the Imaging Communities. "We have all the right ingredients in place. Exhibit space is nearly sold out, but that’s only in the short term."

"Nothing could be more important than working to develop new educational and support programs for our 10,000 worldwide members," he adds. "Included in this effort is a stronger mission statement and better communication systems between all key industry executives in manufacturing, distribution and retail."

"Jim's role as the new Executive Director of PMA comes at a challenging and exciting time for both our industry and the association," says Neil D. Cohen, PMA past president and CEO, District Photo Inc., Beltsville, Md. "I've worked with him for many years on a variety of different projects and his vast experience makes him the ideal person to lead PMA and strengthen the association going forward!"

Sales revenue increase of 54% inside 18 months – delivered through price point ranging adjustments and a formal sales process for staff to follow.

Increased Conversion Rate of 17%, Average Transaction Value 30% - achieved through a simple system of tracking shop floor Key Performance Indicators (KPIs).

Improved staff selling capability - staff able to sell as well as the business owner through a system of non-negotiable sales and service standards.

new Mk100 DSLR Microphone by hähnel

A new generation of Compact & DSLR cameras now have the ability of capturing high definition video clips almost as well as they capture high resolution stills.

Recording good quality sound is challenging on a DSLR camera as the use of both the lens zoom and auto focus can create a lot of unwanted noise. However, the quality of the sound recorded can be vastly improved with the help of an external microphone.

The Mk100 by hähnel is fitted with a 14mm Electret Condenser Capsule which produces high quality broadcast sound with a uni-directional pickup.  This is achieved using a Super Cardroid design which ensures maximum sound input from the front of the microphone, resulting in targeted audio recordings with minimum interference from both sides and behind.

Additionally, the Mk100 is fitted with a unique rubber  suspension system known as a ‘shock mount’ which absorbs unwanted mechanical vibrations from the camera.  A 3-position volume sensitivity switch has -10dB, 0 & +10dB settings which allow the user to optimise the microphones performance when recording both high & low level audio.

Fitted with a hot shoe adaptor with 3/8” thread, the Mk100 fits easily onto any camera, boompole, monopod & tripod.

AAA batteries are also included, giving over 100 hours  of running time. The new Mk100 DSLR Microphone will be available in the shops from early-mid November (RRP £89.99).

They are also revamping all of the group’s websites to make them more useful to resellers. Midwich continues to add value to resellers as with the launch of Midwich Credit Intelligence which can run risk checks on end users on behalf of Midwich customers, as well as providing details of known fraudsters and updates on practical credit risk issues.

Royal Photographic Society elects a new President

The Royal Photographic Society has elected Roy Robertson HonFRPS as President. He takes over from Rosemary Wilman HonFRPS and will hold office for two years until 2013. Roy is the Society’s first Scottish President since the Earl of Crawford was elected in 1897.
Roy Robertson, a resident of Newport-on-Tay, joined the Society in 1989.  He gained an Associateship the same year and Fellowship the following  year for his distinctive pictorial photography. He became Regional Organiser for Scotland and held that role for nineteen years. Roy has served on the Society’s Council with responsibility for Exhibitions, the Regions and overseas membership and spent eight years on the Society’s Licentiate Distinctions panel. He was elected Vice President in 2009.
Roy’s photography and photographic interests revolve around documentary and contemporary photography and working in the landscape. He commented: “I am passionate about my own photography and during the term of my presidency I am seeking to provide further opportunities for members to share their own experiences and to learn from each other. I am keen to expand the many different ways that members and the wider public can find and develop their own routes in photography and I believe that the Society is well placed to do this”.
The same election saw a new Council and Advisory Board elected.
