PhotoIreland is running for the full month of July

The PhotoIreland Festival is an organisation dedicated to stimulating a dialogue around Photography in Ireland, and to promoting internationally the work of artists in and from Ireland. It is set to run from 1st to 31st July 2014.

From the organisers:

In 2010 PhotoIreland was launched, Ireland's first international festival of Photography & Image Culture: PhotoIreland Festival. We celebrated Ireland's first Book & Magazine Fair in 2011, dedicated to Photography. It was the germ of The Library Project, a unique public resource library focused on the photobook opened this year. Our work continues outside the festival period with a varied programme that includes events like Apres Paris.

The Irish Museum of Modern Art (IMMA), the Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA), the Gallery of Photography (GOP), the Sirius Arts Center (SAC) and other organisations have recognised the importance of the photographic practice through specific awards, by starting their own collections, or by promoting Irish photographers internationally. Source magazine has been publishing in Ireland since 1991 providing a platform for emerging and established photographers to have their work distributed nationally and internationally. Belfast Exposed Northern Ireland’s only gallery of contemporary photography who commission, publish & exhibit local and international photographers. The Gallery Of Photography and the National Photographic Archive (NPA) are at the forefront of Photography in Ireland, as in conjunction they offer to a wide audience a permanent space dedicated to the past, present and future of this media.

PhotoIreland focuses in the following areas:

- To celebrate a yearly festival of Photography around the country.

- To develop a comprehensive photobook collection and offer free public access to it throughout the year.

- To develop a specific collection of books on contemporary Irish Photography.

- To promote the creation of MA and PhD Photography programmes in Ireland.

- To establish an Irish Photographic Foundation.

- To lobby for the creation of an Irish Museum of Photography.

Canon today announces a new addition to its EF-M lens range

Canon announces a new addition to its EF-M lens range with the introduction of its first dedicated telephoto zoom lens – the EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM. Designed for Canon’s Compact System Camera, the EOS M, the new EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM features Canon's signature optical performance, advanced Stepping Motor Technology (STM), a 3.5-stop optical Image Stabilizer, and provides a versatile 55-200mm focal range to help users get closer to the subjects they love.

The EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM joins three existing lenses in the EF-M range, which together offer a diverse variety of focal lengths from 11-200mm. The perfect addition to any EOS M kit bag, the new lens opens additional creative possibilities for EOS M shooters through its suitability to capture a wide selection of scenes – from eye-catching portraits at 55mm, to wildlife at 200mm.

Developed using the company’s unparalleled optical expertise, the EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM features Canon’s powerful optical Image Stabilizer and STM technology to deliver outstanding levels of detail when shooting stills and movies. When shooting movies specifically, STM technology ensures smooth focus transitions, as focus shifts from one subject to another. The STM mechanism also provides near-silent focusing, giving videographers the ability to shoot movie soundtracks which capture the natural ambience of the scene in front of them. Additionally, thanks to a highly-effective 3.5-stop optical Image Stabilizer, which reduces visible camera shake, users can also shoot sharp stills while using the zoom, and steady movies while capturing action.

Constructed of a high quality metal exterior – a trademark of the EF-M lens range – the EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM is also compact, lightweight and portable, making it ideal for everyday use. Inside the lens, an Ultra-low Dispersion (UD) element delivers outstanding image quality throughout the zoom range. Furthermore, its non-rotating front element makes it easy to maintain a consistent effect when using filters, and the full-time manual focus ring offers greater creative freedom to adjust focus during shooting.

EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM key features:

- Get closer to the action with your EOS-M camera

- Image Stabilizer keeps images sharp

- Compact enough to go anywhere

- Smooth, near-silent STM focusing

- Make quick adjustments with a manual focus ring

- Shoot great quality images – full of sharp details and rich colour

Pricing and availability

The EF-M 55-200mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM is available from July with an SRP £329.99/€389.99.

Canon celebrates the 25th anniversary of the EOS-1 series cameras

Canon is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the EOS-1 series, the Company's flagship range of interchangeable-lens cameras. Canon's EOS series made its original debut back in 1987 with the launch of the EOS 650, the world's first AF (autofocus) single-lens reflex camera to employ a fully electronic mount system, capable of controlling functions including AF and aperture adjustment using electrical signals. Two years later, in 1989, the Company introduced its first professional EOS model, the EOS-1. Created to meet the advanced demands of professional photographers, the EOS-1 boasted cutting-edge technologies, class-leading levels of performance, new levels of ergonomics, high durability and reliability, and marked the inaugural model of Canon’s EOS-1 series.

Since this time, Canon has continued to demonstrate its commitment to the photographic industry by evolving its flagship-model cameras in order to consistently meet the requirements of professionals in step with the changing times. In 1994, at a time when professional photographers began to rely on AF capabilities offered by SLR cameras, Canon launched the EOS-1N. Compared to its predecessor, the EOS-1N provided a greater number of focusing points and increased predictive focusing when tracking moving subjects.  In 2000, the Company introduced the EOS-1V which featured a brand new 45-point high-density Area AF system delivering high-speed predictive AF of up to 9 frames per second.
With the dawn of the digital era, in 2001 Canon launched its first flagship professional Digital SLR (DSLR) camera — the EOS-1D, followed by the full-frame EOS-1Ds in 2002. Canon's current flagship professional DSLR camera, the EOS-1D X, was brought to market in June 2012, and marked the EOS-1 series' 13th model*. Offering an unparalleled combination of speed, resolution and image quality, the EOS-1D X has continued to garner strong acclaim from professional photographers working across a wide range of fields, from photojournalism and sports coverage, to commercial and nature photography.
Over the past 25 years the powerful flagship EOS-1 series has incorporated cutting-edge technologies and class leading levels of performance. These strengths have expanded across the entire camera line up from entry level models to professional. Canon has always consistently strived to produce exceptional cameras that expand the creative shooting possibilities and meet the evolving needs of photographers at all levels and will continue to do so in the future.

Canon reveals irista, a cloud-based image management platform

Canon has unveiled irista - an advanced, cloud-based image management platform that allows users to access, enjoy and manage their photo libraries like never before.

People today take thousands of digital photographs which have become scattered across multiple devices, irista is built to help curate entire image libraries in one central location. Previously known in beta-form as Project1709, irista makes it easy to find any picture or any memory – regardless of which device it was shot on.

irista has been created around four consumer needs:

- Simple to use: Making it quick and easy to find any image in a photo collection

- Connected: Share images directly on Facebook® and Flickr and keep track of likes and comments

- Inspired: A single place for people to interact with their images, enhance their photography skills and get the most out of their pictures

- Puts everybody in control: All images stored securely in one location so they can be accessed anytime, anywhere

Built using Canon’s unrivalled heritage and imaging expertise, irista has been designed for anybody looking to manage their memories. The unrivalled user experience, coupled with its design, puts people back in control of their image collections.

The service supports a wide range of file types, has no file size limitations and automatically uploads new additions to image collections. A sleek user-interface is supported by a powerful search index, which allows people to locate an image based on a wide range of criteria. The clean, tiled design features a customisable timeline ribbon and tag-based filtering options that make it easier to find shots using dates, location, custom user tags, lens type and much more. Social integration with Facebook® and Flickr also allows users to publish images on both platforms, as well as track social comments, directly from the irista interface.

“People are taking more photos on more devices than ever before, but it can be difficult to enjoy your images when they’re stored in different places,” said Alessandro Stanzani, Head of Consumer Imaging Group, Canon Europe. “With irista, we’ve created a platform that solves that problem. It’s currently the only service of its type and is built entirely around the needs of the user – reflecting a lot of the feedback received during the beta phase. It’s an invaluable resource for those who love their images, and will only get better as we add more and more features over time.”

irista is available to everyone, with tiered storage options to suit a range of different needs. The ‘entry’ tier offers 10GB of cloud storage space completely free-of-charge. It offers casual or hobbyist photographers full use and functionality of the irista platform, providing them with an ideal place to manage libraries or specific photography projects. Advanced enthusiasts or professional users, who require larger capacities, can also choose from two further storage options, with 50GB and 100GB tiers available for a monthly or annual cost.

irista subscription tiers are as follows:

Up to 50GB: £4.49/€4.99 per month, or £45.00/€49.00 per year

Up to 100GB: £9.99/€10.99 per month, or £99.00/€109.00 per year
