PMA elects Gabrielle Mullinax as President for 2015-2016

In a history-making vote, PMA elected Gabrielle Mullinax, owner of Fullerton Photographics in Fullerton, California, as president for 2015-2016, marking the first time in its 91-year history that PMA has elected a female president.

Fifteen years ago, as an entrepreneurial photographer and young mother, Mullinax bought a minilab and joined the ranks of the photo industry. At the cusp of the digital age, this was a analog film processing lab without so much as a computer onsite. With a deep, inherent understanding of her target market - women like herself - Mullinax devised creative, unique promotional campaigns and new product innovations that proceeded to turn Fullerton Photographics into one of the most successful specialty photo stores in the United States. Not only did Gaby spur remarkable growth in her business, but she also transformed the landscape of the retail photo world overall. As a leader at PMA and a speaker for imaging industry organizations such as IPI, PRO and FotoSource, Mullinax generously shares her ideas with others, many of whom have adopted them and achieved similar success.

"As the new President of PMA, Gaby is bringing not only her knowledge and experience of this industry, but also her endless imagination, her undaunted spirit and her absolute refusal to fail," said John Segall, of Lifetouch, Inc. "Her passion for this industry and its success is unparalleled, and her leadership is exactly what the industry needs."

Outgoing President Bill Eklund of Sharp Photo in Eau Claire, Wis., said, "Gaby is taking over leadership of PMA at the perfect moment, as we are committing to revitalizing PMA just like she revitalized her business. She is the right person at the right time. I can't think of a more qualified leader for the job."

In her acceptance speech, Mullinax noted, "We are taking a fresh look at the possibilities. We are envisioning what PMA would be if it was a brand new organization, coming into existence now for the first time. We are using that picture to restructure, to build something new that serves the current and evolving needs of our members today, and of our future members.

"This is your PMA, and we invite you to join with us in reinventing it. As a unified industry, we will be a powerful force for change, growth and development," she continued. "Together, we can help consumers realize and embrace the fact that pictures matter. We can do this, because we believe in photos. We believe in this industry. We believe in PMA."

In related news….

The PhotoImaging Manufacturers and Distributors Association (PMDA) honored PMA President Gabrielle Mullinax with its Visionary Award at the 2015 PMDA International Awards Dinner on January 5, held at the XS Nightclub at Encore in Las Vegas, Nev.

One of the highest honors awarded in the imaging industry, the PMDA Visionary Award is bestowed on individuals whose work helps shape the photo business space and blaze a trail for others to follow.

"We are delighted that PMDA has chosen to recognize and honor our newly elected president of PMA with the Visionary Award. Gaby's leadership has been vital to setting PMA's path into the future, just as it has been in redefining the entire concept of the photo retail business," said PMA CEO Georgia McCabe. "Now, as she takes on her most important role yet in leading PMA as President, it's wonderful for her to be recognized as the true visionary she is. Gaby is so richly deserving of this award."

"We're proud to acknowledge Gaby as a true visionary in our industry," said Jerry Grossman, Executive Director of PMDA. "Her creativity and spirit bring a certain spark that is admired by her peers, and her enthusiasm for innovation is something that we all should emulate. The PMDA is thrilled to recognize her contributions with our 2015 Visionary Award."

Other PMDA honorees include Person of the Year Go Miyazaki, President and CEO of Fujifilm North America Corp.; Technical Achievement Award, Wataru Otani, Ricoh Co.; Lifetime Achievement, John Clouse, Nikon Inc.; Professional Photographer Award, Joe McNally.

PMA announces new CEO Georgia McCabe

The Board of Directors of PMA have announced longtime industry veteran Georgia McCabe has been appointed Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director. Georgia is a well-known visionary and industry leader who will be bringing in a new and exciting era for PMA and its members.

"There has never been a more thrilling time in imaging, yet the industry faces a lot of challenges. There is such a need for a guiding force to pull it together and lead the charge into a future filled with opportunity, and that's what we're going to do. Welcome to a new PMA," said McCabe.

PMA has been serving those in the imaging industry for close to a century - but over the past 20 years, the photo business has evolved into a very different field. "The imaging industry is a whole new world from what it once was, and PMA is transforming along with it. Our purpose as an organization is to provide for our members in new ways, creating new value and new avenues to success. To do that, we are rebuilding PMA from the ground up." McCabe said. "We are dedicated to communication - actively seeking the input of our current members, and our future members, so we can create the new PMA together. We invite the people who comprise this amazing industry to join with us as we build a bright, thrilling future for us all."

"Georgia brings a wide-ranging, unique background and skill set to PMA, including business, technology and marketing, along with a remarkable depth of knowledge of the industry and how to connect with today's consumers. She is also something of a legend in the imaging field," said PMA President Bill Eklund of Sharp Photo in Eau Claire, Wis. "Her creative vision and innovative thinking led to an array of exceptional achievements in her previous positions at IBM, Kodak and Fujifilm; as well as in her own business, as an entrepreneur. We are happy to welcome Georgia to the helm of PMA, and so very excited to work with her as we develop a vibrant and strong organization that will bring the industry together and meet the needs of our members today and tomorrow."

"I am thrilled to see Georgia McCabe appointed as the new CEO of Photo Marketing Association," said Manny Almeida, Senior Vice President & General Manager, Electronic Imaging Division, Fujifilm North America Corp. "Georgia brings a deep understanding of our industry and most importantly the passion to bring the necessary innovation and collaboration to the Association, the supplier community and the dealers. Congratulations, Georgia, I am looking forward to supporting your efforts."

Tom Curley, Business Development Manager, Panasonic North America, stated, "In this amazing age of digital transformation that is affecting all aspects of our lives, Georgia McCabe has the leadership skills and industry experience to guide the Photo Marketing Association into the future, and make imaging relevant once again."

Rick Smolan, former TIME, LIFE and National Geographic photographer, and co-creator of the "Day in the Life" book series said, "Georgia McCabe is an outstanding leader and visionary. What Georgia brings is a unique ability to see possibilities where others see obstacles. I experienced this first hand with her when we launched Alice to Ocean. It was the first book to have digital images included that help accompany the journey in print. Her appointment as CEO of PMA can only mean very good things for the imaging industry. Under her direction, PMA is poised to unite the industry and help create greater opportunities for us all."

Announcing the new RICOH WG-5 GPS

RICOH IMAGING EUROPE S.A.S. has announced the launch of the RICOH WG-5 GPS, digital compact camera, which boasts outstanding waterproof capability, advanced GPS functions and the best shock-resistant performance in the RICOH digital compact camera lineup.

The latest high-end model in RICOH's waterproof digital compact camera line up, the RICOH WG-5 GPS is designed to be waterproof to a depth of 14 metres, shockproof against falls from heights of 2.2 metres, and cold-resistant to temperatures to as low as -10°C. Thanks to the combination of a large-aperture, four-times optical zoom lens with a maximum aperture of F2.0 and a highly sensitive, back-illuminated CMOS image sensor, it delivers high-quality, noise-free images, even when shooting poorly illuminated subjects like underwater scenes, nightscapes and indoor sports events.

This model also includes several new features to enhance photographic creativity, including scene-specific optimisation of white balance; a flash mode dedicated to the Mermaid shooting mode; and Vibrant and Reversal Film finishing. Its basic specifications are solid and dependable, thanks to advanced features like dual anti-shake protection, Full HD movie recording (1920 x 1080 pixels), and a 3.0-inch, wide-frame LCD monitor. The WG-5 GPS also comes equipped with a GPS unit to record position data and travel log data onto captured images, a pressure/altitude/depth gauge and digital compass.

The WG-5 GPS's exterior design is easy-to-hold owing to it's non-slip body, and comes in a a choice of two colours - orange and gun metallic.

Main Features

1. Heavy-duty construction for underwater shooting down to 14 metres deep, for up to two continuous hours: The solid, airtight body of the WG-5 GPS is not only waterproof to a depth of 14 metres for up to two hours of continuous operation (equivalent to IPX 8 or JIS Class 8), but also shockproof against a fall from heights of 2.2 metres,* dustproof (equivalent to IPX 6 or JIS Class 6), cold-resistant to temperatures as low as -10°C, and crushproof against weights up to 100kgf (kilogram force).** This dependable, heavy-duty construction meansthe WG-5 GPS performs superbly and dependably in harsh, demanding outdoor conditions.

* Measured under RICOH IMAGING-original testing standards - from a height of 2.2 meters, onto a surface of 5cm-thick plywood - conforming to Method 516.5-Shock of the MIL-Standard 810F.

** Measured under RICOH IMAGING-original testing standards.

2. Exceptional image description, thanks to a large-aperture zoom lens and the latest imaging

technologies: Equipped with a bright zoom lens with a maximum aperture of F2.0 at its wide-angle end, the WG-5 GPS produces beautiful, noise-free images. With its four-times optical zoom coverage from 4.5mm to 18mm (equivalent to approximately 25mm to 100mm in the 35mm format), this versatile zoom lens accommodates a wide range of photography, from macro shooting of flowers to wide-angle photography of sweeping landscapes.

3. High-quality image reproduction: The WG-5 GPS features a state-of-the-art, back-illuminated CMOS image sensor, which excels in high-sensitivity and low-noise characteristics. Coupled with a high-performance imaging engine, its image sensor delivers a top sensitivity of ISO 6400 and super-high-resolution images with approximately 16.0 effective megapixels. The WG-5 GPS also provides advanced image processing functions, to guarnatee sharp, clear, high-resolution images. It also includes innovative features like Handheld Night Snap mode, which automatically captures several images of the same nighttime scene and produces a single blur-free composite image from them. When shooting in the Landscape scene mode, it is also programmed to optimise the white balance to depict woods and forests in brilliant shades of green.

4. A comprehensive selection of underwater shooting modes: The WG-5 GPS is programmed to reproduce vivid shades of red, which are often lost in underwater photography, by optimising the colour and contrast of images recorded underwater in the Mermaid and Mermaid Movie modes using actual image data of those underwater scenes. It is also designed to produce sharp, clear images by compensating for the degradation of contrast caused by the diffusion of light in the water. The aperture and shutter-speed regulation has also been reviewed to minimise camera shake in underwater shooting. In the Mermaid mode, a (Flash Off + Flash On) mode has been added to the list of flash modes to consecutively capture two images of the same scene - one without a flash illumination and another with it - with a single shutter release.

5. Dual anti-shake protection for sharp, blur-free images: The WG-5 GPS's dual anti-shake protection system combines an image-sensor-shift-type SR (Shake Reduction) mechanism with a Digital SR mode to more compensate for camera shake and subject shake in shake-prone conditions, such as when photographing a poorly lit subject using ambient light only, or when shooting sunset scenes.

6. Six Macro Lights to assist close-up shooting: With six LED Macro Lights positioned around the circumference of the lens barrel for macro shooting, the WG-5 GPS provides bright, uniform illumination on the subject when the Digital Microscope mode is selected.*** Thanks to these Macro Lights, the user can clearly see on the camera's LCD monitor a magnified view of the microscopic world undetectable by the naked eye, and effortlessly capture it in beautifully illuminated, eye-catching images. In order to minimise camera shake and subject shake, the instant illumination enhance function allows for the use of a higher shutter speed by automatically raising the illumination level of the Macro Lights at the moment of shutter release. The Macro Lights also provide other useful functions, such as Self-Portrait Assist mode, which uses the blink of an LED lamp to check if the subject's face is captured within the picture frame, and the LED Lighting mode that uses the Macro Lights as a lighting device in the dark.

*** When this mode is selected, the recorded size is fixed at 2.0 megapixels (at 16:9 proportions).

7. Full HD movie recording for extended shooting of high-quality movies: The WG-5 GPS provides Full HD movie recording in the H.264 recording format, allowing the user to capture high-quality, extended movie clips (1920 x 1080 pixels, 16:9 proportions) at a frame rate of 30 frames per second. It also provides such creative movie-shooting tools as a high-speed camera function**** for slow-motion playback of captured movie clips, and a fast-forward movie function.***** A micro-HDMI terminal (Type D) is also provided on the camera body for simultaneous output of Full HD movie clips and sound to external audio-visual devices.

**** When this function is selected, the recorded size is fixed at 1280 x 720 pixels.

***** When this function is selected, the recorded size is fixed at 640 x 360 pixels.

8. 3.0-inch, wide-frame LCD monitor for wide-angle viewing: The WG-5 GPS comes equipped with a large, 3.0-inch LCD monitor with horizontally extended 16:9 proportions. Its wide-view design provides a clear view of an on-screen image from approximately 170 degrees horizontally and vertically, making it possible to check the image from different angles. Its AR (Anti-Reflection) coating minimises annoying glare and reflections to ensure a sharp, clear on-screen image even under the harsh sunshine often found in outdoor shooting.

9. GPS functions, pressure/altitude/depth gauge and digital compass to facilitate outdoor

shooting: The WG-5 GPS has a built-in GPS module, which automatically records position data and travel log data onto captured images and adjusts the built-in clock to local time. Its pressure sensor and digital compass also allow the user to check the data of a shooting location (pressure, altitude/underwater depth, and direction) on the camera's LCD monitor.

PENTAX K-S2 announced

The new PENTAX K-S2 claims to be the world's smallest dustproof, weather-resistant digital SLR camera with a variable-angle LCD monitor, wireless LAN and NFC functions, available in multiple colours.

The latest camera to join the ranks, this new upper-class model, is the world's smallest dustproof, weather-resistant digital SLR camera* designed for active, outdoor shooting. In addition to the PENTAX-original SAFOX X autofocus system, which performs superbly with poorly illuminated and moving subjects, it provides a full range of advanced features, including: an AA (anti-aliasing) filter simulator to assure the same level of moiré-reduction effect as an optical AA filter; an optical viewfinder with a glass pentaprism to provide a nearly 100% field of view; an in-body shake reduction mechanism; and a top sensitivity of ISO 51200.

It also provides remote shooting functions and wireless LAN and NFC functions - for the first time in the PENTAX K series -  to make it easier to pair with smartphones and tablets.

The K-S2 LCD monitor also features a variable-angle design for the first time in a PENTAX digital SLR camera. By rotating the monitor 180 degrees to face the subject, the user can activate the self-portrait shutter button, to capture the perfect selfie!

This model comes in a range of three main body colors: black, white and black & orange. And as with other models in the range also offers the PENTAX colour order service with a choice of seven additional colour options in two outdoor-themed collections: three in the Field Collection, and four in the Sports Collection.

To accompany the K-S2 RICOH IMAGING has also developed the smc PENTAX-DA L 18-50mm F4-5.6 DC WR RE standard zoom lens as an exclusive kit lens. This weather-resistant lens features a retractable mechanism to make it compact and portable without sacrificing optical performance. By pairing this lens with the compact K-S2 camera body, users are guaranteed a highly portable digital imaging system that performs brilliantly.

* The world's smallest model in the dustproof, weather-resistant digital SLR camera category (as of February 1, 2015, based on RICOH IMAGING research)

Main Features

1. The world's smallest dustproof, weather-resistant body*: The K-S2 camera body is not only designed to be compact and portable, but also dustproof and weather-resistant. One hundred seals have been applied to crucial parts of the body to prevent the intrusion of rain and dust into the interior, making the K-S2 a perfect choice for a wide range of outdoor activities, including mountain climbing and camping. Included in its lens kits is a super-compact zoom lens, with a length of just 41mm in the stored position despite its weather-resistant construction. The combination of the K-S2 camera body and this lens creates a highly portable digital imaging system.

* The world's smallest model in the dustproof, weather-resistant digital SLR camera category (as of February 1, 2015, based on RICOH IMAGING research)

2. Variable-angle LCD monitor for easy image viewing: The K-S2 comes equipped with an Air Gapless LCD monitor, which has a special resin layer applied between the protective panel and the LCD screen to effectively cut down the reflection and dispersion of light and assure excellent visibility. This monitor also features a variable-angle design for the first time in a PENTAX digital SLR camera, allowing the user to set the monitor to the desired viewing angle and simplify high- and low-angle shootings. By rotating the monitor 180 degrees to face the subject, the user can activate the self-portrait shutter button, which is provided in addition to the regular shutter-release button, to keep a firm hold of the camera when shooting self portraits (or selfies!).

3. High-precision autofocus system with SAFOX X module: The K-S2 features the state-of-the-art SAFOX X AF sensor module, which assures responsive, high-precision autofocus operation. With its 11 sensors including nine cross-type sensors in the middle, this AF system assures pinpoint focus on a subject at a minimum brightness level of as low as -3 EV. Its select-area expansion function ensures that the sensor module keeps tracking a moving subject, even when the subject moves out of a pre-assigned auto-tracking area, by assessing the distance data collected by neighboring focus sensors. Its AF hold function maintains the in-focus position, even when the AF system loses track of the subject after once capturing it in focus. These advanced functions combine to improve the camera's accuracy in the detection of moving subjects.

4. High-resolution images produced by an image sensor with approximately 20.12 effective megapixels and a super-high sensitivity of ISO51200: The K-S2 features a high-performance CMOS image sensor with approximately 20.12 effective megapixels to deliver super-high-resolution images. It is also designed without an optical AA (anti-aliasing) filter to optimise the imaging power of its high-performance image sensor. By coupling this image sensor with the high-performance PRIME MII imaging engine, the K-S2 delivers true-to-life, fine-gradation images by effectively minimizing noise at all sensitivity levels, even during super-high-sensitivity shooting at ISO 51200.

5. In-body shake reduction (SR) mechanism, and anti-aliasing (AA) filter simulator for effective moiré reduction:

(1)In-body SR mechanism: The K-S2 features a PENTAX-developed SR (Shake Reduction) mechanism to minimise camera shake and assure sharp, blur-free images, even in camera-shake-prone conditions such as when using a telephoto lens, shooting low-light scenes with incident light only, or photographing sunset scenes.

(2)Innovative AA (anti-aliasing) filter simulator**: By applying microscopic vibrations to the image sensor unit at the sub-pixel level during image exposure, the K-S2's AA filter simulator provides the same level of moiré-reduction effect as an optical AA filter. Unlike an optical AA filter, which always creates the identical result, this innovative simulator lets you not only switch the AA filter effect on and off, but also adjust the level of the effect, so the user can effortlessly apply the desired effect to a particular scene or subject.

(3)Supportive shooting functions: The K-S2's SR unit has a flexible design that tilts the image sensor unit in all direction, by shifting it horizontally (left/right) and vertically (up/down), and even rotating it. Taking advantage of this flexibility, the K-S2 provides a host of handy shooting functions, including ASTRO TRACER, which simplifies advanced astronomical photography in combination with the optional O-GPS1 GPS Unit.

** This function is most effective with a shutter speed of 1/1000 second or slower. This function is not available during HDR (High Dynamic Range) shooting.

6. Optical viewfinder with nearly 100-percent field of view: Despite its compact body, the K-S2 is equipped with a glass prism finder featuring the same optics and coatings as those used in higher-level models. With a magnification of approximately 0.95 times, it provides a broad, bright image field for easy focusing and framing.

7. High-speed shutter to capture fast-moving subjects in crisp focus: The K-S2 provides a top shutter speed of 1/6000 second to assure sharply focused images, even with fast-moving subjects. Coupled with its high-speed continuous shooting function with a top speed of approximately 5.5 images per second, it lets the photographer freeze once-in-a-lifetime shutter opportunities in beautifully focused images.

8. Wireless LAN compatibility for easy access to smartphones, for the first time in the PENTAX K series: The K-S2 features wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) functions to provide better access to smartphones and tablet computers. It also provides NFC (Near Field Communication) functions for easy pairing with NFC-compatible smartphones and other communications devices, simply by bringing the K-S2 into proximity with a target device. Also by installing the newly developed, exclusive Image Sync application on a communications device, the user can effortlessly control the K-S2's aperture, shutter-speed and ISO-sensitivity settings, release its shutter, check the live-view image, and even browse and upload recorded images onto SNS sites such as Facebook remotely.

9. RICOH-original image-processing technologies: The K-S2 features a Clarity Enhancement - a RICOH-developed imaging technology designed to capture the subject's texture and unevenness more truthfully and produce a more true-to-life depiction of the subject based on the human visual characteristics. Also provided on the mode dial is a new A-HDR (Advanced HDR) position, which combines the Clarity Enhancement with the conventional HDR mode that composites a single, extra-wide-gradation image from three images taken at differing exposures. Thanks to this new mode, the user can capture more dramatic, painting-like HDR images with great ease.

10. An assortment of photo-shooting tools for creative, personalised expressions: The K-S2 provides a choice of 11 Custom Image modes for flexible control of various parameters, as well as nine digital filters. Coupled with 19 distinctive Scene Modes and the hands-off Auto Picture mode, the K-S2 assures simple, quick selection of the desired shooting mode for a given scene or subject.

11. Dual electronic dials: The K-S2 provides a pair of electronic dials: one on top of the grip, and another on the back panel. In the P (Program) mode shooting, for instance, the user can control the aperture and shutter-speed settings independently using these dials, allowing more intuitive camera operation without the need to remove the eye from the viewfinder.

12. Full HD movie recording: Equipped with a built-in stereo microphone, the K-S2 captures beautiful Full HD movie clips (1920 x 1080 pixels; 30/25/24 frame rate) in the H.264 recording format, along with natural, lively stereo sound. It also assures flawless, high-quality movies even with fast-moving subjects. It even provides advanced movie functions, such as a 4K Interval Movie mode that connects still images recorded at a certain interval to create a single movie file, and a Star Stream mode to fade in and out the traces of stars to recorded movies.

13. Other features:

?77-segment, multi-pattern metering system for high-precision light measurement

?DR (Dust Removal) mechanism for effective elimination of dust on the CMOS image sensor

using ultrasonic vibration

?Self-timer functions usable in continuous shooting mode

New Camera and Lenses from Ricoh

Ricoh Imaging UK, has announced the launch of the following new products: HD PENTAX-D FA 70-200mm F2.8ED DC AW, HD  PENTAX-D FA 150-450mm F4.5-5.6ED DC AW. Plus, RICOH IMAGING UK, is also excited to announce the exhibition of a reference product - a digital SLR camera currently under development - at CP+ 2015.

HD PENTAX-D FA 150-450mm F4.5-5.6ED DC AW

RICOH IMAGING COMPANY, LTD. is pleased to announce the launch of the HD PENTAX-D FA 150-450mm F4.5-5.6ED DC AW super-telephoto zoom lens, designed for use with PENTAX K-mount digital SLR cameras.

This super-telephoto zoom lens has been developed to cover focal lengths from 150mm to 450mm - a focal-length range demanded by high-end PENTAX-camera users. It features the PENTAX-original, high-grade HD Coating to produce extra-sharp, high-contrast images even under demanding lighting conditions like backlight. It also incorporates three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and a super-low dispersion glass element to effectively compensate chromatic aberration. Its dustproof, weather-resistant body also makes it extremely dependable and durable when shooting outdoors.

Main Features

1. Super-telephoto coverage with three-times zoom ratio: When mounted on a PENTAX K-mount SLR camera body, this zoom lens covers a super-telephoto range from approximately 230mm to 690mm in the 35mm format. It is designed to be compact and light enough to hold during long-range shooting of wildlife, aircraft and sports.

2. Outstanding image description: This lens boasts state-of-the-art optics - three ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements and a super-low dispersion glass element, this minimises spherical and chromatic aberrations, while producing crisp, high-quality images free of colour bleeding.  Its MTF (Modulation Transfer Function) curve is programmed to be higher than those of conventional models in the same class, to deliver high-resolution, fine-detailed images. Its image circle is also optimised to cover even the image size of 35mm film-format SLR cameras. As a result, it ensures brilliant, high-resolution images without compromising edge sharpness (even when mounted on an existing PENTAX digital SLR camera body), and is also accepting of future models with larger image sensors (without modifications).

3. HD Coating to optimise image rendition: This lens is treated with the high-grade, multi-layer HD Coating.* Compared with?conventional multi-layer coatings, this PENTAX-original coating ensures high light transmittance and less reflection to deliver bright, high-contrast images, free of flare and ghosting. * HD stands for High Definition.

4. Dustproof, weather-resistant construction: Developed as an AW (All Weather) model, this zoom lens features a dependable dustproof, weather-resistant construction with 21 special seals to prevent the intrusion of water and dust particles. By pairing it with a PENTAX weather-resistant digital SLR camera body, it provides a durable, reliable digital imaging system that performs - even in rain or mist, or at locations prone to water splashes or spray.

5. Newly installed three-position switch for Quick-Shift Focus System: This lens is equipped with the PENTAX-developed Quick-Shift Focus System, which allows users to instantly switch to manual-focus operation after the subject is captured in focus by the camera's AF system. In order to improve its operability, a three-position switch has been installed on this lens, allowing instant switching among QFS/A, QFS/M and MF modes. QFS/A is an autofocus-priority mode, which allows the user to switch to manual-focusing operation when autofocus operation is complete. QFS/M is a manual-focus-priority mode, which enables the user to switch to manual focusing at any time - even when the AF system is in operation. MF mode allows the user to instantly switch to manual focusing with a simple twist of the focus ring on the lens. With a choice of three distinctive modes, the user is guaranteed speedier, more accurate focusing operation for a given subject or application.

6. Four AF buttons installed on the lens barrel: In order to provide more stable AF operation and better hold of the lens regardless of the camera's orientation - horizontal or vertical - this lens provides four AF buttons on its barrel (one at every 90 degrees.**) The user can assign preferred settings to these AF buttons, including: a Focus Preset mode and an AF Cancel mode to fix the focus at a desired point during Continuous AF operation. ** The PENTAX K-3 is currently the only model to accommodate the AF button functions. To activate these functions, the camera's firmware must be updated to the latest version.

7. Other features

·         Smooth, quiet AF operation using a lens-installed AF driving motor

·         Round-shaped diaphragm to produce a natural, beautiful bokeh effect, while minimising the streaking effect of point light sources

·         Focus range limiter to minimise AF operation time by fixing the focus range to one of three ?sub-ranges

·         SP (Super Protect) coating to keep the front surface free of dust and stains

·         Zoom lock lever to prevent the lens barrel from free-falling

·         Detachable tripod mounting with a newly designed anti-falling mechanism

Note: Designs and specifications are subject to change without notice

HD PENTAX-D FA? 70-200mm F2.8ED DC AW

A high-performance, Star-series telephoto zoom lens for use with PENTAX K-mount digital SLR cameras, providing F2.8 maximum aperture over the entire zoom range to deliver outstanding image rendition

RICOH IMAGING COMPANY, LTD. is pleased to announce the launch of the HD PENTAX-D FA? 70-200mm F2.8ED DC AW. Designed for use with PENTAX K-mount digital SLR cameras, this large-aperture telephoto zoom lens is a new addition to the high-performance Star (?) series developed for the highest level of image rendition.

This telephoto zoom lens has been developed as the latest model in the PENTAX Star (?) series, which boasts the highest image quality of all PENTAX interchangeable lenses. Thanks to its large-aperture design, it provides a large maximum aperture of F2.8 at all focal lengths from 70mm to 200mm. This lens boasts PENTAX-original lens-coating technologies - such as the newly developed Aero Bright Coating II (which ensures exceptionally low reflectance), and the high-grade HD Coating (which produces extra-sharp, high-contrast images free of flare and ghost images). In addition to four super-low dispersion glass elements and two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements, its optics includes a pair of new Super ED glass elements to effectively compensate chromatic aberration over the entire zoom range and deliver crisp, high-resolution images with edge-to-edge sharpness. Its dustproof, weather-resistant body also makes it extremely dependable and durable in outdoor conditions.

Main Features

1. High-performance Star (?)-series lens with large F2.8 maximum aperture: This telephoto zoom lens is a new addition to the high-performance Star (?) series, which ensures exceptional image rendition with edge-to-edge sharpness. When mounted on a PENTAX K-mount SLR camera body, it provides a zoom ratio of approximately 2.9 times to cover a telephoto range from 107mm to 307mm in the 35mm format. Since it provides a large maximum aperture of F2.8 over the entire zoom range, it is ideal for portraiture with beautifully defocused fore/backgrounds, and sports photography which demands high shutter speeds. Its image circle is optimised to cover even the image size of 35mm film-format SLR cameras. As a result, it ensures brilliant, high-resolution images without compromising edge sharpness (even when mounted on an existing PENTAX digital SLR camera body), and is also accepting of future models with larger image sensors (without modifications).

2. State-of-the-art optical technology: This zoom lens is treated with the newly developed Aero Bright Coating II - a lens-coating nanotechnology that employs a super-low refractive film fabrication process, to ensure lower light reflectance  than that of the conventional Aero Bright Coating.* By coupling this advanced lens coating with the high-grade, multi-layer HD Coating** which reduces an average reflectance in a visible ray spectrum to less than 50% of conventional multi-layer coatings, this lens effectively reduces flare and ghost images to a minimum even under demanding lighting conditions. In its optics, it also features four super-low dispersion glass elements, two ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass elements, and two Super ED glass elements, which have optical properties similar to fluorite and assure lower light dispersion and more effective compensation of chromatic aberration. As a result, this lens produces brilliant, high-contrast images with edge-to-edge sharpness, while effectively compensating chromatic aberration over the entire zoom range. * A state-of-the-art, PENTAX-original lens coating technology developed from nanotechnology. It applies a silica aerogel coating layer with uniform porous structure over a regular multi-coating layer to reduce surface reflections across a wide wavelength range and produce crisp, high-quality images. ** HD stands for High Definition.

3. Dustproof, weather-resistant construction: Developed as an AW (All Weather) model, this zoom lens features a dependable dustproof, weather-resistant construction with 13 special seals to prevent the intrusion of water and dust particles into the lens interior. By pairing it with a PENTAX weather-resistant digital SLR camera body, it provides a durable, reliable digital imaging system that performs - even in rain or mist, or at locations prone to water splashes or spray.
