‘bench mark’ for UK portraiture is all back to front.

Haddenham, Bucks-based photographer Paul Wilkinson is setting a new ‘bench mark’ for portrait photography that includes pictures of customers sitting with their backs to him on garden seats.  And now his innovative ideas have helped win him a prestigious MPA Fellowship.

Explained Wilkinson (43), who runs the Paul Wilkinson Photography Studio; “Since I won an MPA UK Parent and Child Photographer of the Year title three years ago, with  a ‘back to front’ pose of a young family sitting on a bench by the River Thames, more and more of my clients have asked for similar portraits.”

He added:  “I was absolutely thrilled to be told this month I had been awarded Fellowship status. A Fellowship is the highest qualification available and I am told there are less than eighty currently in the nationwide association that was founded almost sixty years ago.”

Wilkinson, a full-time professional for just eight years, only joined the MPA three years ago and picked up his first title win in the first competition he entered.

“ My passion is to consistently create interesting and evocative images – and that doesn’t always mean you have to show a full face” he  said, “I study how people interact with each other and their environment – and that can lead to the creation of highly original images that  are bursting with personality. The bench shot seems to have pioneered a trend and I am often asked to recreate that shot with children and couples – even at weddings.  So who knows, perhaps I am creating a ‘bench mark’ in more ways than one!”

of customers want their ‘back to front’ pictures taken on a garden seat….so who knows, perhaps I  am creating a ‘bench mark’ in more ways than one!”

Leading European portrait and wedding photographer, Kevin Wilson, who has mentored Wilkinson for the past three years said: “Paul has an amazing ability to create timeless, top quality work. Every picture he creates has its own emotion and a story attached.

Achieving Fellowship status is a terrific accomplishment – most photographers never get there. It really is a triumph for him. It proves he has true creative flair, linked with substantial technical skill.”
